Here is some information on the NHBRC:

NHBRC – National Home Builders Registration Council.

The NHBRC is an organ of the state established to protect the interests of the housing consumer and to regulate the homebuilding industry in terms of the Housing Consumer Protection Measures Act, 1998 (Act no. 95 of 1998)

According to the law homebuilders must be registered with the NHBRC, and the following must be enrolled:

  • All new residential dwellings built after 1 December 1999,
  • regardless of selling price,
  • whether mortgaged or un-mortgaged,
  • whether subsidised or not.
  • All sectional title units (flats, cluster homes and townhouses)
  • All full title units
  • Maisonettes.
There are a few exemptions e.g.
  • Hostels.
  • Hotels.
  • Commercial buildings.

If you plan on building as what is commonly referred to as “Owner Builder” then you still need to apply for exemption before construction starts.

ALWAYS ENROL, OR GET EXEMPTION, BEFORE YOU START WITH CONSTRUCTION – IT IS THE LAW!!
